One of the symbols of this city is the Big Ben. The history of Big Ben begins in 1834 when the Palace if Westminster is destroyed by fire. After this unfortunate event, the authorities launched a competition for a new project to reconstruct this Palace. The design made by Charles Barry was declared winner of this competition because it was more original than other projects made for its reconstruction.

The winning project of Charles Barry involved the construction of the clock tower as well. Its bell was designed to have 14 tons. The competition for the design and the construction of the new bell was huge, as many experts from the entire country wanted to make it. The project to make the clock was given to a specialist called Edward Dent. Later on, the constructors met unexpected problems but they managed so solve them immediately.

The architect who designed it forgot to make the provision for the clock of the tower. After Edward Dent died in 1853 the mechanism of the clock was completed by Frederick Rippon who was his stepson. Another important symbol of London is the traditional phone booth. The Tower of London also became an important attraction of this city. It was build in 1078 by William the Conqueror. It was first meant to be a royal residence.

The Tower Bridge was built between 1886 – 1894. Its name was given after the Tower of London which is located near the Tower Bridge. Many tourists who come to London want to enjoy the view of this beautiful city from the London Eye. The view they can see from the glass pods of the London Eye is simply extraordinary.

It is situated by the River Thames and is visited every year by millions of tourists from around the globe. The Buckingham Palace is another important landmark of this city. Its gardens and spectacular parks represent very important advantages which give this place an unique perspective in the eyes of its visitors.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is another important place of London which should be seen by anyone who wants to admire the most important symbols of the city. It was build between 1675 and 1710 and it was, in time, the site of several important events such as the royal weddings.
